Moist air favors the growth of the tea plant, and proper relative humidity is essential for transforming tea leaves into quality tea during processing.

Precise control of temperature and humidity is especially important during the oxidization (also known as fermentation) process. This process provides the right conditions for the conversion of polyphenols into theaflavins, theanosides and other compounds that give tea its distinctive flavor and color.

Tea production process turns out to need humidification

If the tea leaves are dried out, the oxidation rate will be slowed down because moisture is needed for the oxidation process. Continuous fermentation must maintain the relative humidity of the environment at 95-98% RH and the temperature at 20-26°C. Even a slight drop in humidity will affect the fermentation process and reduce the quality of the tea.

Humidification during tea production is beneficial:

(1) Fermentation/oxidation processes maintained at high relative humidity (95-98% RH)

(2) Balanced distribution of moisture within traditional floor and tray fermentation chambers and the ability to maintain constant relative humidity during CTC fermentation

(3) Promotes color change and inhibits spotting - reduces waste and increases yield

(4) Pre-fermentation humidification during rolling and chopping - reduces drying out of broken edges

(5) Inhibits static electricity generation in tea bag production, also improves machine operation and reduces dust generation
